Understanding DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a form of therapy that aims to help individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation and difficulty in interpersonal relationships by teaching them skills to cope with and manage their emotions, tolerate distress, and improve their interpersonal effectiveness. Since its inception, DBT has been found to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions and has been adapted for use with different populations such as individuals with substance use disorders, eating disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

DBT combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy with principles of mindfulness, dialectical philosophy, and effective communication styles. DBT operates on the understanding that individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation and difficulty in interpersonal relationships often have underlying biological vulnerabilities, combined with environmental factors that interfere with the development and use of adaptive coping skills. DBT also consists of various components including, but not limited to: individual therapy and group skills training

DBT Techniques: Skill-Building for a Better Life

DBT utilizes a combination of individual therapy sessions, skills training groups, phone coaching, and therapist consultation to provide comprehensive treatment. One of the key techniques used in DBT is mindfulness. Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment, and it can help individuals become more aware of their emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations. This increased awareness allows individuals to respond to challenging situations in a more skillful and effective way. At Joie de Vivre Counseling and Therapy we offer online mindfulness classes to help women cultivate present-moment awareness and develop a non-judgmental attitude towards their thoughts and emotions.

Finding the Right DBT Therapist: Tips and Guidelines

When seeking a DBT therapist, it is important to find someone who has received proper training in delivering DBT interventions. This can include completing a comprehensive DBT training program, receiving supervision from an experienced DBT therapist, and obtaining certification in delivering DBT interventions.

At Joie de Vivre integrative services can be combined with DBT such as, Biofeedback, Mindfulness and Nature Therapy to compliment your treatment and promote emotional regulation and a healthier lifestyle.
